RE: MH Crashes in Buffalo Wy.

They must not have been using 2nd gear coming down the last stretch before town. We came through the same route last month at this time. We did not even need to use brakes coming down in second gear. I saw way too many people forgetting to down-shift coming down grades. I think many people think it's only for semi's, and not meant for them.

RE: generator won't "kick over"

I would check some of the simple things first. Is your fuel tank more than 1/4 tank full? If the motor-home was not level it might not get gas with more than 1/4 tank. Did you do as the dealer suggested and prime the generator before starting? This may be necessary for two or three tries. I would also check the altitude adjustment knob for the correct altitude. This adjustment controls the rich-lean running of the engine. Also check the error code last left in the generator.

A generator can loose close to 50% rated output at high altitudes. Many airconditioners have shortened lives by being run when in brownout conditions. I would recommend getting a voltage meter to plug into one of your 110v AC outlets while using your generator to power the airconditioner. If the voltage drops below normal AC voltages, quit using the airconditioner before you send it to an early grave.

I would just remind everyone that the mfg. states the product has a shelf life of four years. We do not know whether that is for the adheasive or tape itself. We know many people are very pleased with the product when initially used. I would withold judgment on the product until we hear how well it does over a longer term. Removing old caulking, and recaulking may be better in the long run, than removing old eternabond tape. I guess we will know more when we hear back from members who have had the product on for 5 years or more.

RE: Taking 91-year old parents to Washington DC: Advice?

We have taken my wife's folks (95 & 93 years old) camping in our motor-home five times since fall 2006. Last trip was three nights on July 4th weekend. They are slowing down for walking but do fine in the motor-home. They might rather stay in the motor-home, and not go with your for all the walking trips. You might play it by ear for how often they wish to walk.

Well anything is possible. In the last few years, I have seen posts on Class A and Class C about Televisions falling out of the cabinets, and of cabinets coming loose and falling down. Moving your kids to a safer position is a prudent move.

Don had commented about buying used instead of buying new, which he does quite often. With today's conditions, it does make sense. Especially if you need to borrow more than one-third of the amount spent. An average motor-home is driven about 5,000 miles a year. If you use 10 mpg, and $4.00 per gal, as an example you would spend $2,000. for the year for gas, or about $185. per month for gas. If you look at the bills you get, you can add up the amount of money you paid for interest on each loan, or credit cards. This interest owed to banks and credit card companies is the main reason people can't afford to travel, not the amount spent on fuel.
If you might fit this category, you might want to consider buying used, and save on the first few year's depreciation hit.

One other very important point I forgot to mention. There is a large difference between camping in hot-dry weather and hot-humid conditions. In hot-humid conditions the breaker can loose up to 20% rated power. For a 15 amp circuit this means the breaker will pop at only 12 amps load. You have almost no chance of getting 2 people to share the outlet, let alone 4. That's why almost all campgrounds prohibit such a procedure. It has more to do than just charging more money.

In some motor-homes, such as mine, there is no transfer switch. They use a more basic approach. The shore-power cord must be first unplugged at campground outlet, and then plugged into generator AC outlet, and generator then turned on. This is the same way a portable generator would be used. Only problem in motor-home is to always plug cord into generator outlet when not in use on shore-power. Otherwise, you might start generator and have no power inside, having forgot you were not plugged in. It is possible some units have been designed to handle both power-sources at same time, but most RV's do not come set up that way.

If someone owned the trailer ahead of you, I would suspect that the person may have been worried about propane leaks, and installed a propane detector somewhere in the utilities access areas. It was most likely hard-wired and fused, and may bypass a cutoff switch. I never heard of a humidity alarm. In hot weather, full propane tanks can vent, and if enclosed the person may have smelled the chemical used in propane to detect it, and maybe installed an extra detector.

It is a useful site. I found it last month when I used Google and entered "gas prices (city,state)". We went to Yellowstone, and Wyoming and S. Dakota are just about the cheapest states. Many people traveling out there because of prices.

I saw a post last week mentioning the fuel hose from gas tank to generator. The fuel hose, or way it was attached to tank, was sucking air with fuel, causing a similar problem. If your fuel hose is ten years old, it or the connections might be your problem.

While my motor-home's alternator while pass along up to 70 amps/hr for battery charging my two T-105's, you separate tow truck passes along much less. The charging wire is small and probably fused 30 amp. The means the actual charging amps are much less. It is also possible the fuse blew, and you were getting no charging to trailer battery bank. If your trailer had a battery disconnect switch, the switch must be left on for battery charging. Some items left on such as refrigerator on propane on some settings may overcome what charging was taking place. Airconditioner use in the tow vehicle could lower amps left for charging trailer batteries.
